We recently talked with a dog owner who truly believed they were doing everything right. They have a sweet bluetick coonhound rescue that tends to be full of energy, always sniffing, and always exploring. Every year, as soon as the weather warmed up and mosquitoes became noticeable, they started giving their dog a monthly preventative. They stayed consistent through the spring and summer, sometimes even into early fall. Then, when temperatures dropped and mosquitoes seemed to disappear, they stopped. To them, it made perfect sense: no mosquitoes, no heartworms, no need for medication.
Unfortunately, that gap in protection led to an unexpected problem. At their recent annual exam, the dog tested positive for the hookworm antigen, requiring two rounds of treatment given three weeks apart. This family had a boarding appointment, but testing positive for the antigen meant that it was no longer safe to board their pet without possible transmission to other dogs.
What they didn’t realize was that the medication they were using could have protected against hookworms, too–but only if it had been given year-round, consistently. During the months they skipped, their dog was still exposed. Hookworm larvae in the soil didn’t disappear just because it was cooler outside. And with a dog that loved sniffing, digging, and exploring, exposure was almost inevitable. This is the same with heartworms. Heartworm prevention is not retroactive, meaning it only kills larvae from the last 30 days. A lapse in prevention, regardless of previous prevention, puts your dog at risk.
Why Skipping Months Can Backfire
Parasites don’t follow neat seasonal rules. In many regions, mosquitoes don’t ever fully disappear, and even indoor environments can still lead to exposure. While mosquitoes may slow down in cooler weather, other parasites remain a threat. Hookworm larvae can survive in soil for long periods of time, and dogs can pick them up from yards, parks, or even on walks around the neighborhood. When you skip doses, you’re leaving a window open for infection. And once parasites like hookworms or heartworms take hold, treatment becomes more costly and uncomfortable for your pet.
Consistency Is the Key to Proper Protection
The biggest takeaway is simple: prevention only works when it’s consistent. When most pet owners think about heartworm prevention, they picture one thing: mosquitoes. It makes sense, since heartworms are transmitted through mosquito bites. It feels logical to focus on prevention during the warmer months when mosquitoes are most active. But here’s the reality: heartworm prevention products like NexGard® (and similar medications) often protect against much more than just heartworms. They can also guard your dog against dangerous intestinal parasites like hookworms and roundworms, and that protection is needed year-round. Let’s talk about why skipping doses or only giving preventatives seasonally can lead to serious problems and vet bills!
More Than Just Heartworm Protection
Many modern parasite preventatives are designed to be broad-spectrum. That means in addition to preventing heartworm disease, they may also treat or control:
- Hookworms
- Roundworms
- Other intestinal parasites (depending on the product)
- & sometimes fleas and ticks (depending on the product)
Hookworms, in particular, are a big concern. Hookworms are common, thrive in warm, humid environments–like the Southeast–and have several methods of transmission, including ingestion or even skin contact. These tiny parasites live in your dog’s intestines and feed on blood, which can lead to:
- Anemia
- Weight loss
- Lethargy
- Diarrhea or dark, tarry stools
In severe cases, especially for puppies, hookworms can become life-threatening if left untreated. Giving your dog their preventative medication every single month maintains continuous protection, breaks parasite life cycles, and saves you from costly and stressful treatments later on down the line.
The Bottom Line
It’s easy to think of parasite prevention as a seasonal task, but your pet’s risk doesn’t disappear when the weather changes. If there’s one thing to remember, it’s that prevention isn’t just about timing; it’s about consistency. At All Kreatures Pet Care, we’re here to help you keep your pet’s wellness top-of-mind.
